For lunch, we head straight to ‘Zum Martin Sepp’ . Set among the vines, it serves honest Austrian comfort food – crisp Wiener Schnitzel, homemade apple strudel – alongside wines the same family has produced for over a century. Order what they grow: their signature ‘g’spritzt’, a young white cut with soda. If the sun’s out, it’s the most Viennese way to spend an afternoon.

If a tighter schedule calls for a quick bite, steps from your apartment, duck across to ‘Gallo Bianco’ at Heiligenstädter Straße 34 for fresh pizza, pasta, or a crisp salad.

After lunch, take a stroll through the Nußberg Vineyards. Walking between the terraced hills, the views open up across the Danube in the kind of slow reveal that trumps anything on your calendar. In Vienna, walking uphill through vineyard rows counts as legitimate exercise, especially when there’s a glass of Grüner Veltliner waiting at the top.

Bob-servation: watch for seasonal wine stands (‘Buschenschanken’) dotted among the vines. They usually close around 7pm–8pm as darkness falls, so head up earlier in the afternoon to catch them open.

For a brush with genius, the Beethoven Museum Heiligenstadt sits in the house where he wrote the 'Heiligenstädter Testament' – proof that the quietest rooms sometimes hold the loudest thinking.

If the city's calling, take the tram to Karlsplatz for the Secession – and go for one thing. Klimt's golden 'Beethoven Frieze' runs the length of a basement room, and being surrounded by it is the closest Vienna gets to stepping inside a painting.

Head up Kahlenberg Mountain for a sweeping panoramic view as the sun drops over the city basin and terraced vines. Prefer a waterfront setting? Walk the Danube Canal instead and watch the evening light change over the graffiti-lined banks, drink in hand at one of the seasonal waterside bars.

Dinner belongs to Mayer am Pfarrplatz – a Viennese institution, a classic ‘Heuriger’ wine tavern, and a former Beethoven residence. Keep your eyes peeled for the traditional ‘Ausg’steckt is’ sign outside: a bundle of pine branches hung above the doorway. In Viennese dialect it literally means ‘it’s put out’ – the winemaker’s way of telling the neighbourhood the new-season wine is ready, and the candlelit courtyard is open.

If the night is still young, wander down to The Sign, an award-winning neighbourhood cocktail bar with over 200 drinks on the menu. Bob-servation: order one of their tasting flights; three small cocktails are always better than one.
