No cars, no rush, and enough terrace chairs to make sitting down the obvious move. Come early, before the day heats up, and you'll catch the square at its best: in no rush, and glad of it.

For a proper local start, Café Terra de Mar is just off the square – good breakfast, good tapas, and tables outside, which matters, because in Valencia the coffee always tastes better en una terraza. Or if you'd rather something in your hand for the walk up, Chouchou Paris does coffee and a croissant worth the small detour.

Here's the thing about Valencia: the real breakfast happens at ten. The esmorzaret – the mid-morning second breakfast – is a regional institution, and it is not a light snack. Traditionally it runs to three things: a bocadillo, a beer, and a cremaet – a small, strong coffee laced with rum and condensed milk, flamed at the table. Most people quietly skip the beer at this hour. The cremaet, however, is non-negotiable.

For the bocadillo, locals point you to Bar Punt i Apart – a slightly less showy location than the square, but the one Patraix actually rates, and kind on the wallet too. If you'd rather stay on the Plaça, Bar Patraix is the classic Spanish neighbourhood bar: nothing fancy, but hard to beat for a terrace table right on the main square. For the cremaet to finish, Stella Brutal and El Racó de Mara are both known for doing it properly.

Bob-servation: here's the rule – finish a bocadillo with a cremaet and you can officially say you've had a proper esmorzaret. The beer's optional. The cremaet is the part that counts.

Walk off the sandwich in the old village core, where the prettiest streets in Patraix are hiding in plain sight. Carrer de l'Alcúdia is a lovely one to wander, and Carrer de la Beata Inés rewards a slow look with some genuinely good street art – all without the crowds you'd fight for the same charm downtown.

Keep an eye out for L'Alqueria de Mara, a restored historical farmhouse that now moonlights as a creative and craft space – a reminder that Patraix's farming past never fully left, it just picked up new tools. To feel like a true local, head to the Mercat de Jesús-Patraix, where you’ll queue behind grandmothers who’ve shopped the same stalls for sixty years. The produce, for the record, is a lot fresher than that.

For a quiet sit-down, the Parc del Pare Jofré – known locally as the 'Parque de los Locos' for the former hospital it was built on – is worth a pause, with the Parroquia de Santa María de Jesús standing right beside it.

Bob-servation: if it's a Tuesday, the Mercadillo de Jerusálen is a short walk out of the barrio, over by Estació del Nord – a traditional street market for vintage finds, plants, and cheerful bric-a-brac. Worth the detour if you like a rummage.

When you're ready for a proper sit-down, Petraher does elevated, modern Valencian cooking – and takes its name from the medieval farmstead that Patraix grew out of, which tells you how seriously they take the local roots. It's the spot for a lunch you linger over rather than a quick bite between errands.

A quick note on timing: this is Spain, so dinner doesn't really start until eight, and kitchens rarely open much before. Use the gap. As the afternoon cools, Patraix eases into its evenings without much ceremony. La Taberna de Patraix has a lovely reputation – a small kitchen cooking fresh dishes to order, so it's worth swinging by earlier in the day to check hours and put your name down, especially for a group, and especially at weekends.

Time your visit for autumn and you may catch the Festes de Patraix, the kind of neighbourhood festival Valencia does so well – street paellas, verbenas, fireworks, and the whole barrio out in the streets it spends the rest of the year quietly living in.

Bob-servation: if the night's still going, head over to Abastos and Bar Cassalla – an upscale, trendy Valencian bar where the food's as good as the drinks. And if you want a whole neighbourhood to roam, Ruzafa is a little further and one of the city's best for a late drink among locals rather than tourists.
