Bob W and the Chocolate Factory

Let's dive into the delicious history behind Bob W Østerbro. Once upon a time, in the late 19th century, Anthon Berg, a Danish greengrocer, ventured into confectionery. He opened a shop on Copenhagen's Old Strand and by 1884, expanded his endeavours, acquiring a confectionery business with his son Gustav.

Initially made to appease waiting customers, the marzipan he made soon became a coveted delicacy in Denmark. In 1898, it was produced as an independent product in shiny pink wrappers.

By 1901, Gustav Berg took over the business and production surged, propelling the company into the limelight. By tirelessly expanding operations, Anthon Berg chocolates became a staple in retailers across Denmark. This period marked the inauguration of the factory on Teglværksgade, which now stands as the location of Bob W Østerbro. At its peak, this facility was bustling with approximately 200 employees, contributing to the flourishing success of the Anthon Berg chocolate enterprise under Gustav Berg's leadership.

In 1938, Gustav Berg passed away and Kai Berg took over as director. Eventually, the company was acquired by Toms (Victor B. Strand) and the entire production was consolidated at the Toms plant in Ballerup. So, the location on Teglværksgade in Østerbro ceased being a chocolate factory in the 1960s.
