Drinks with Giuseppe and strolls by the canal: Bob’s guide to Milan
Neighbourhood28.05.2025
Recently, it feels like I haven’t woken up to the same view twice. There was the new opening in Helsinki, then all the furniture to unpack in Stockholm. Still, I found time to check out how the refurb of my place is going down in Milan. I was ready for some heat.
Understanding a neighbourhood and its people is always my favourite part of travelling. It’s realising you’re not relying on Google Maps anymore, or that you’re no longer hurriedly scanning the menu as the waiter approaches because you already know where you want to start. It’s the moment when the research ends and experience takes over.
If you’re heading to Milan this summer, I’m here to give you a headstart. These are some of my favourite spots.
8am, morning coffee – Don Bistrò Milano
Fuel up for the day with a quick breakfast and a coffee, just across the street from my place. The coffee is an all-bean dream – and under €2! If you’d prefer to catch some morning sun, grab a takeaway and head to Parco Giovanni Paolo II right around the corner. Come back later in the week to try one of the flatbreads for a simple, fulfilling lunch.
Address: Via Larga, 4, 20122 Milan
Opening Hours: Mon-Fri: 07:30 - 18:30, Sat-Sun: Closed
1pm, relaxed lunch – Disciplini Cafè
Don’t be fooled by the Comic Sans signage. Inside, this is a cosy, laidback spot to get lunch after a busy morning of sightseeing. Locals love it and if you’re lucky, you might get some creative coffee foam art. There’s a tiny convenience store inside – ideal for grabbing some mints post-lunch so you’re ready to take on the afternoon’s adventures with a smile.
Address: Via dei Disciplini, 10, 20123 Milan
Opening Hours: Mon-Sat: 07:30 - 20:00, Sun: Closed
3pm, canalside stroll – Naviglio District
Just a short 15-minute walk away from my place, the Naviglio district is perfect for a scenic stroll along the canal. Charming bars and restaurants line the bank, making it the ideal spot for an Aperol Spritz and some people-watching. It’s pretty exposed here under the Milan sun, so I recommend taking an umbrella to keep out of the heat. Check for local events like antique markets if you’re looking for a memento.
8pm, classic dinner – Dal Bolognese Milano
Keep things classic. Come and settle yourself in the bright courtyard garden as the sun goes down, the hubbub of the neighbourhood bouncing off the warmed walls. You’ll find amazing pasta dishes, with a lively atmosphere and impeccable service. It might even be worth ironing that shirt you brought with you. If all you want is a quick bite on the go, don’t stop here. Make sure to book – it’s popular for a reason.

10pm, rooftop drinks – Allaperto
You won’t have to go far for this one – it’s right on the rooftop! The owner, Giuseppe, is a legend and the epitome of an Italian host. He’ll talk you through their incredible curated wine selection while you take in the unbeatable views of the neighbourhood’s tiled rooftops. Great if you want to squeeze the last hours out of the day without travelling far.
