Raw concrete and luxurious furnishings: A design tour of Helsinki Kamppi

Ever walked into your holiday accommodation and forgotten where you are? City, country, continent, they’re all lost the moment you close the door behind you. It’s consistent, sure. But completely disconnected from the vibrant neighbourhood outside and all those who make it happen.

Bob doesn’t go in for that sort of thing. He likes to keep things a little more local. And when it comes to drawing on the neighbourhood for design inspiration, Bob W Helsinki Kamppi shows how it’s done.

Opening to the public later this year, this 1970s icon comes complete with thoughtfully furnished studios and apartments, and a showstopping rooftop lounge and sauna. It is Finland, after all.

The project came alive in partnership with our friends at Slättö, and designed with local award-winning studio KOKO3 to give Bob W Helsinki Kamppi its own unique style. The rich, cosy colours form the perfect canvas for locally sourced statement pieces, from the soft furnishings to the mugs in your cupboard.

“The Lönkka building was built in 1970. At the time, it was a modern office building with an inner courtyard and roof area where you could take in views of Helsinki. We wanted to embrace the era, but combine it with contemporary Helsinki flair. Picture raw concrete ceilings, beautiful tactile walnut details, textured shaggy carpets, brought together by a warm and inviting colour palette”. @Koko3.fi

Want to take a peek inside? Here are just some of the design highlights you’ll find.

The Apartments

It all starts when you open your eyes. Wake up to joyfully striped Matri headboards that make breakfast in bed even more tempting. The fact they were constructed in a solar-powered factory is a bonus. When you’re finally ready to leave your bed, Fiskars kitchenware and characterful ceramics by artist Tero Kuitunen will have you cooking up a storm. Before you hit the neighbourhood, freshen up with premium bodycare from 19-69.

“I love to use bold colours, unexpected forms and humor. With these choices I want to evoke people with questions, make them happy and find insightful solutions.” @Tero Kuitunen

The Co-working Lounge

With scenery like this, you won’t want to shut your laptop. Smusso pendant lights designed by Matti Syrjälä take centre stage. His philosophy? To make timeless pieces built to last. That’s something Bob can get behind. The space is finished off with vintage chairs selected from Mjuk, so you can enjoy another sustainable rework while you co-work.

The sauna lounge

This new Helsinki icon deserved something special, so we’ve partnered with respected glassware company, Iittala, to bring some sleek Scandi style to this intimate rooftop space. They’re serious about sustainability, creating misty vases and glassware from their own recirculated factory glass. If you leave with a shopping list of statement pieces you never knew you needed, we won’t be held responsible.

You’ll find architectural furniture by Vaarnii up here, as well as throughout the apartments and coworking lounge. Crafted from Finnish pine, items by the Helsinki-based company are celebrated internationally. When you’re ready for something more cosy, stretch out on the ikimakee sofas and Woven Works rugs. Saunas are a relaxing business, after all.

“A sofa is a simple, everyday object, but it has the potential to be much more, without being overly complicated.” @ikimakee

The rooftop

There’s plenty of company out on the rooftop. Beneath the lazy driftings of native gulls, Bit Stools from Normann Copenhagen are ready to hold your drinks. Their speckled colour offers a clue to how they’re made—chunks of plastic recycled to make something new, meaning each one is unique. Designed by Simon Legald, they were named Best of Year 2021, by Interior Design Magazine. Alongside, laidback chairs and loungers by HAY have saved you a spot with a view.

Can’t wait until the official opening to take a walk through this real-life Pinterest board? You’re in luck. Bob has treated us all to a soft launch, so you can book rooms—and the sauna—right now. See you there.
